Aviation News – Latvian airline airBaltic has introduced a new onboard digital platform, ‘Skynet’, aimed at bringing together in-flight services into a single system accessible to passengers during their journey.
Launched in March 2026, the platform is available to passengers on their personal devices via the Starlink-powered internet. Travellers can connect to the Wi-Fi network without downloading an app or creating an account.

A single hub for onboard services
Skynet includes features such as real-time flight tracking, onward connection details and destination content. It provides access to onboard menus and entertainment, replacing traditional printed materials.
The platform introduces a retail function through ‘AirMall’, allowing passengers to browse products from external brands during the flight. Purchases are delivered after arrival rather than carried onboard, reflecting a shift in how airlines approach in-flight shopping.
In addition, the system promotes services such as accommodation, transport and activities, suggesting a broader push to generate ancillary revenue beyond the ticket itself.

Built on expanded connectivity
The rollout of Skynet builds on the airline’s investment in onboard connectivity, with a growing number of its Airbus A220-300 aircraft already equipped with Starlink internet.
While digital platforms are becoming more common across the industry, their success often depends on how actively passengers choose to engage with them. Access to Skynet requires users to enter the platform themselves, rather than being automatically directed to it when connecting to Wi-Fi.
The launch of Skynet reflects a wider shift in aviation towards more integrated digital experiences onboard. Rather than simply offering internet access, airlines are increasingly using connectivity to deliver services and generate additional revenue.
However, the long-term value of platforms like Skynet will likely depend on passenger uptake. Without clear incentives to use it, engagement may remain limited despite the technology being readily available.
